Literacy Program
Celebrating 3 years
Supreme Task has been working as a light in the darkness in Prem Nagar, Baljeet Nagar. This is an area where children are the victims of child labor, child abuse, drugs and alcohol. Supreme Task is actively involved in the literacy program, which focuses on children's education. Out of 60 students who have enrolled in the program 59 have been promoted to the next class and 12 have scored various ranks in their respective classes. Though the work has started in a small way we believe it will grow and the knowledge of the glory of God will fill this place.
People and Place Prem Nagar near Baljeet Nagar is a slum in New Delhi consisting of people mostly from the state of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. This slum consists of 500-600 families. STI staff those have visited this place reported that the place is full of mud and dirt. This causes the mosquitoes to grow. As a result people suffer from various diseases.
Most of these people are daily laborers. Their financial struggle is so high that they even struggle for their daily bread. Educating their children is far from their dreams. 35 % of the children in that area do not go to school due to various reasons. Some of them start going to school but cannot complete schooling. The reasons behind all these are the financial struggle and lack of encouragement, facility and infrastructure. Children who do not go to school are victims of child labor. They are ever ready targets for rag picking and begging 'jobs' since they have no idea of the importance of education. Most of the fathers are daily laborers. Their main professions are rickshaw pulling, rag picking and begging. These parents do not hesitate to drag their children into this kind of work!! Fathers teach sons how to steal, beg and take drugs whereas mothers pull their young beautiful daughters into prostitution and begging. "Is there anyone to HELP?" is the cry of those little children. Instead of playing and gaining wisdom from the schools these children spend most of their time on the streets. Drugs and alcohol as mentioned earlier are not far away from these children because their parents are addicted to alcohol and various types of drugs.
Through the Literacy Program of Supreme Task our teachers are creating awareness among the parents who are slowly realizing the importance of education. Even though the environment is not conducive to learning and their families do not encourage their education these small children have resolved to build their lives through education. They realize that unless they do something rag picking and every kind of other unpleasantly is in their future.
Not only are these students growing academically they are also growing spiritually. Their faith in the Lord is growing daily. They are the silent witnesses of God's faithfulness in their community.
Student Testimony
Aarti a 11 year old brilliant little girl, studying in the5th grade was very disturbed by seeing her parents fighting in the house everyday. Her father is a daily laborer who earns Rs200/day (5 USD). He is unable to provide for his family and for her education because he is addicted to alcohol. He has sold their belongings to buy drugs and alcohol. Aarti was very frustrated by seeing this situation. She requested her friends and teachers to pray for her family. As they prayed and she herself prayed for a change in her situation God started moving and there is a change in her family. Parents do not fight any more and her father is trying to leave his habit of Alcohol. She is enjoying peace in her family and this miracle has created great faith within her. This year she has scored 1st position in her class.Program Results of Students for 2006 - 2007
